Major companies to fight cyberattacks after global security alert

Major companies to fight cyberattacks after global security alert

The global technology community is currently facing one of the biggest challenges – critical security vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language, which is used by millions of websites and web services. Today, the UK government, together with partners from the European Union, Australia and other countries, is working urgently to identify potential exposures and implement remediation measures. This situation raises serious concerns about the potential for cyberattacks, especially when the vulnerabilities were discovered using artificial intelligence (AI).

Government authorities call for swift action

The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has announced that all organisations – public and private, large and small – must follow the guidance it has issued and implement patches as soon as possible. The NCSC also advised that if immediate remediation is not possible, organisations should consider temporarily disabling affected systems until all security measures have been implemented. This advice reflects the serious threat posed by the ability of hackers to upload their code to servers and carry out any number of operations, including data theft or network intrusions.

Reaction from tech giants

Major tech companies, including Google, OpenAI, and Amazon, have also joined the fight against cyberattacks. Google said its security division has used AI models to help analyze vulnerabilities and test potential attacks. Google Gemini AI was used to assess the extent of vulnerabilities, model potential attacks, and validate the effectiveness of patches.

OpenAI, backed by its AI models, also helped detect the vulnerabilities and coordinated the development of patches. The company said it had been leading a coalition of software maintainers, cybersecurity researchers and security providers for the past two months to prepare protections ahead of the public announcement.

Amazon informed its threat intelligence team that it had detected the PHP2Shell exploit attempts before the public warning. The company used its MadPot system, which automatically detected and limited malicious scanning attempts. After the leak, Amazon reported several additional attempts by different actors, showing that information about the vulnerabilities spread quickly across social media and that AI technologies allow cybercriminals to act within hours or even minutes.

Expert assessments and possible consequences

Alan Woodward, a professor of cybersecurity at the Surrey Center, estimated that the flaws could affect about 30 million websites. He stressed that the vulnerability allows hackers to upload their own code to the server, gain access to data, extend the hack to other segments of the network and even install a „backdoor“ - a permanent entrance in the future. This makes the threat extremely serious.

Cybersecurity researcher Ryan Austin, who has been studying PHP security for 20 years, said that this vulnerability is „the most serious one he has ever found.“ He mentioned that AI helped him discover this vulnerability, and without AI, the process would have taken much longer.

Corrections and future prospects

The PHP framework development team has already released patches, and all interested parties are urging website operators to update their systems as soon as possible. While some organizations may experience technical limitations, it is recommended to temporarily disable vulnerable services until all necessary updates are implemented.

The impact of AI technologies on cybersecurity is becoming increasingly apparent. Anna-Maria Arabia, Australia’s head of AI strategy, warned that „what used to take months is now taking days,“ and that threats will only grow as AI improves. This trend suggests that in the future, cyberattack prevention and response will increasingly rely on automated AI tools.

Conclusion

Cyberattacks related to PHP vulnerabilities pose a huge challenge for both governments and the largest technology companies. A rapid response strategy, cooperation between the public and private sectors, and the use of AI tools are key factors in successfully protecting against this threat. This situation reminds us that the Internet infrastructure is interconnected, and any weak spot can become an entry point for hackers, so constant security monitoring and updates are essential.
